Religious Symbols: There are the themes of life and death, spirituality, man playing god, etc... Christianity is the most common religion used in horror films but also any other type of belief that is greater than humanity.
Symbols of Death: In films, there are many hint and symbols that death is on its way, whether its used through foreshadowing or a prop. For example, In Psycho, the quote “…as harmless as one of those stuffed birds…” links to the taxidermy birds that are in the film which are a representative of the dead mother in the home.
Light: Light is used as a symbol in horror films very frequently to symbolize hope, death, transition and escape. In many horror films we're able to identify that once the sun comes up, there is more hope for life and this is when everything typically is over, for example in 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown'. After all of the events, we see the main character walking whilst the sun is coming up at the end of the film.
Colours: Red and black is usually associated with danger, violence, blood and evil, for example, in Insidious, the 'monsters' face is bright red to show he has evil intentions. Whereas lighter colours like white, indicate something/one being angelic, for example in The Exorcist, the girl is wearing a white night dress which tells her that there is still a bit of innocence left in her.
Weapons: Most horror films include a weapon like a knife, chainsaw, claws and clubs. These are all have a phallic symbol which suggests that men have most power as they 'penetrate' whoever they want, mostly the women, which is almost seen as rape. For example, Leatherface's weapon in Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a chainsaw, whenever someone tries to defeat him, it is always with a smaller weapon; knife, bat, gun... which shows that he is not easily defeated.
Doors and Windows: They're used to show that the characters have the chance to escape from being trapped.
Tunnels and Corridors: They have yonic symbolisms and can be a passage to death, (As Above, So Below)
Keys and Locks: These elements symbolize secrets and the unknown, no one knows what could happen if a secret is told.
Dolls: Dolls are used to create an ironic image as dolls are typically linked with children as their toys as well as clowns, however they're used as a way to make films more interesting by using peoples fears.
Masks: Masks are used to disguise the evil, also they could be wearing a mask to hide a special trait of theirs like a big scar which makes them 'scary' or 'ugly'
Mirrors: Mirrors allow us as the audience to identify different characteristics a person could have in a movie, depending on their situation in the time.
